Heather Tallman Ruhm

Meet Dr. Heather

Heather Tallman Ruhm was born and raised in Montana where she learned to appreciate nature and outdoor life. While attending Montana State University she became a 1985 Harry S. Truman Scholar and member of the US Tae Kwondo Team. She and her husband met during graduate school.  They have one daughter and have hosted many exchange students.  Heather is an avid gardener, certified yoga instructor, former competitive cyclist and skier. She enjoys music and singing and is working on her first book.  She is conversational in German, Dutch and Spanish.

Dr. Heather has always had a strong interest in biomedical sciences and a passion for global health.  She received her MD from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2000 after earning a Master’s in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard a decade earlier.  She attended family medicine residencies in Pueblo, Colorado and Montgomery, Alabama and continues to pursue work and education in integrative, functional and holistic medicine - addressing the health of mind, body, and spirit.

Her Approach

Dr. Heather has worked in integrative clinics across the country, from The Whitaker Wellness Institute in California to the Center for Integrative Medicine in New Hampshire.  She recently helped establish the American Center for Bioregulatory Medicine and Dentistry in Providence, Rhode Island. Working along side a broad array of integrative providers, including chiropractic doctors, holistic nurses, acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors, and nutritionists has given her a better understanding of the many modalities that work together to bring healing and hope.

Dr. Heather integrates modern tools and techniques with wise traditional medical principles from around the world, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  She supports practices that nourish the body and lower its burden or stressors.  Her work reflects the dictum primum non nocer (first do no harm). As co-creator and co-teacher of Foundations in Complementary Health and Wellness she has introduced countless college students to these concepts for over a decade. She expects her patients and students to pursue self-knowledge and self-care too.

Serving You

In her roles as clinician, writer, professor, public speaker, and former podcast host of Health Matters, Dr. Heather strives to understand and share her knowledge in a way that makes sense. She acknowledges that one-size-fits-all medicine does not fit all, that people are complex.  She appreciates the relevance of life stories and life circumstances that call for a personalized plan for healthcare. Dr. Heather loves teaching and deeply values active collaboration with patients, students, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds, both conventionally trained and holistic.

Dr. Heather is honored to be part of a truly integrative team at The NH Health & Wellness Center.  She is available for clinical evaluations, consultations and public speaking engagements.  She serves people of all ages who are willing and able to take an active role in their own health care.  Her conventional training and knowledge of complementary tests and treatments allows her to augment the offerings of primary care providers who may not be well versed in alternative healing arts or lack adequate time to address their patient’s concerns.
